Nilpeter optimises production with an advanced and innovative turning cell

Nilpeter continuously focuses on optimising its production processes. As a global supplier of printing presses for the label industry, precision and efficiency are essential.

A focus on efficiency and precision.

For more than 105 years, Nilpeter has manufactured printing presses for the global market.

As the market continues to grow, production must become even more efficient. Nilpeter’s goal is to increase further automation at its new machine factory, improving both precision and efficiency.

This is where Duroc Machine Tool comes into the picture. Together with our strong partners, we have delivered a complete solution designed to achieve exactly that.

The innovative solution integrates two DN Solutions PUMA SMX 3100SL multitasking turning centres with a highly automated system featuring an advanced robotic arm from Fastems.

I used to set up the machine so it could run overnight. Now, I can set it up to run for several days because the robot can change the machine’s chuck jaws automatically.

It also has 48 tools in a tool storage system inside the robot cell, including sister tools that the robot can retrieve when needed.

Integrated technology for smarter workflows.

To improve production efficiency, Nilpeter has integrated advanced robotic technology into the production cell.

This minimises manual processes and allows operators to focus on monitoring and optimising production instead of carrying out repetitive tasks.

Nilpeter’s objective is to achieve as much unmanned production as possible and thereby reduce costs. The new machine setup supports this with features such as:
  • Automatic chuck jaw changes, including QR marking and scanning
  • Automatic internal and external changing of long tools
  • An additional tool rack outside the machine, with tools changed automatically according to the component being produced
  • Automatic laser measurement
Christian Pedersen, Machine Shop Manager at Nilpeter, is already seeing the benefits of these features:

“The major difference compared with how we worked previously is that we can calculate which tools, materials and chuck jaws are required. If, for example, we have planned 40 hours of production, we can complete the entire run without operators present, provided that all the necessary conditions are in place.”

Collaboration between leading global suppliers.

The complete solution has only become possible because several major suppliers have contributed to the project.

Their collaboration has been essential in creating a unique solution that delivers value for Nilpeter and for other companies that may use a similar setup to increase automation in the future.

This has been a unique journey for Nilpeter. We have seen three major, strong global suppliers work closely together to develop the combined solutions that Nilpeter requires.

Anders Thümmler, Production Manager at Nilpeter

An investment in the future.

The new turning cell is more than an improvement to Nilpeter’s current production.

It is also an investment in the future. Faster machining and greater precision will help Nilpeter strengthen its position as one of the industry’s leading companies.

The benefits of the new production cell include:
  • Shafts can be manufactured in a single setup, ensuring greater precision and shorter lead times
  • Robotic technology reduces manual processes and improves workflows
  • Automation enables more stable and consistent production
  • Optimised processes improve quality assurance
