Measuring Instruments
for CNC Machining.

In modern CNC production, measuring instruments are just as important as machines, tooling and fixtures. If tools are not measured correctly, or offsets are set “by feel”, you pay for it in scrap, rework and lost machine time.

High-quality measuring instruments for CNC machines, such as tool presetters, tool offset sensors and tool measuring systems help you:

Set tools accurately before they reach the machine
Reduce or eliminate test cuts
Keep spindles cutting instead of waiting for setup

Leading suppliers have shown that adding a tool presetter to the workflow can make machining faster, more accurate and more efficient by presetting tools for the next job while the machine continues cutting.

At Duroc Machine Tool, we help you select and integrate measuring instruments that match your machines, your tooling and your production strategy.

Why measuring instruments matter for each role.

For the Hands-On Operator

Easier, more repeatable tool setups
Clear digital or optical feedback instead of guesswork
Less risk of breaking tools during touch-off or test cuts

For the Operational Optimizer

Shorter setup and changeover times
Fewer manual inputs and less operator-dependent variation
More stable processes and better use of machine capacity

For the Strategic Owner

Lower scrap and rework on high-value parts
Higher spindle uptime and better ROI on machines
A more controlled, data-driven production environmen

Tool presetters, measure tools outside the machine.

A tool presetter measures tool length and diameter outside the machine, so tools arrive at the CNC with known values and correct offsets.

Modern presetters typically offer:

High repeatability, often around 1 micron or better on advanced systems
Rigid mechanical design for long-term accuracy and stability
Camera-based vision systems for measuring cutting edges and tool profiles
Intuitive software interfaces that guide the operator through the measuring process

Benefits in daily production:

Tools can be measured and prepared while the machine is still running
Test cuts and manual touch-offs are reduced or eliminated
Tool data can be transferred digitally to the machine control or tool management system

For operators, this means easier setups. For production managers, it frees up spindle time and supports more predictable planning

Tool offset sensors. Safe touch-off at the machine.

Tool offset sensors (sometimes called tool setters or tool touch-off sensors) are mounted on or near the machine table. They allow tools to be touched off automatically in the machine without risking broken tools or damaged workpieces.

Typical features include:

Precision touch surfaces or 3D sensors with high repeatability
LED and acoustic signals that guide the operator during manual touch-off
Integration with the CNC control to automatically write tool length/diameter offsets

Benefits:

Faster and safer tool setting compared to touching off on the workpiece
Reduced risk of human error when entering offsets
Consistent results across operators and shifts

For flexible job shops, combining presetters and tool offset sensors can give maximum flexibility: measure most tools offline, and still be able to set up special tools or prove-out jobs efficiently at the machine.

Other measuring instruments around the machine.

In addition to presetters and tool offset sensors, a complete measuring setup around the CNC machine might include:

Edge and point finders for workpiece zero-point setting
Dial indicator stands and adapters for alignment tasks
Spindle measurement tools to check runout and spindle condition
Balancing systems for tool assemblies to reduce vibration at high speed

Together, these instruments support more accurate setups and help maintain machine health over time

Key benefits of modern measuring instruments.

Investing in proper measuring instruments gives measurable gains in everyday production:

Higher accuracy and repeatability

Micron-level measurement of tool length and diameter
Stable bore and surface quality thanks to correctly set tools

Shorter setup and changeover times

Tools prepared in advance on a presetter
Faster touch-off with automated sensors

Lower cost per part

Less scrap and rework due to wrong offsets
More spindle uptime thanks to reduced non-cutting time

Better documentation and process control

Tool data stored and reused for recurring jobs
Easier standardisation across machines and plants
